LEXINGTON, KY (February 18th, 2014) - Dr. A.J. Powell, Jr., University of Kentucky’s Turf Extension Specialist from 1975-2010 passed away unexpectedly on October 30, 2013.  He was 74 years old.  He is survived by a wife of 51 years, Janie Singleton Powell, two children, Jeff (Ann) and Julie and a granddaughter, Lily Jane, four sisters, and numerous other relatives.A.J. was born in Lacie, Henry County, Kentucky in 1939 and graduated from Campbellsburg High School in 1957. He received his B.S. in Agriculture from the University of Kentucky in 1961 and his M.S. in in Agronomy (soil fertility) from U.K. in 1963.  A.J. continued his studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institure and completed his Ph.D. in turfgrass physiology in 1966.  He served 2 years in the Army in El Paso, Texas and worked at the University of Maryland before returning home to the University of Kentucky in 1975.In addition to his love for his family and Henry County, he truly loved his work in Turfgrass Science.
